• Revy has a total kill count of approximately 128 kills earned throughout the series.
• In a flashback, a young Revy is seen using a Smith & Wesson Model 439 to shoot cans.
• In a volume 4 omake, where everyone including has changed their sex, which Rock is the only one who notices the sudden mad change, Revy appears to be the only one who supposedly still looks exactly the same (only that her chest is completely flat). • In a popularity contest during the 10th collection manga release, Revy ranked #2 with 2,411 votes
• Lara Croft resembles Revy in Crystal Dynamics’ first reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise. Namely for the ponytail, dual pistols, and a similar style in revealing clothing.
• There are various references to Revy’s music tastes throughout the manga and the light novel (but not in the anime, probably due to copyright reasons). Revy is a big fan of rock and metal and has a personal shootout playlist named the «Jitterbug of Death» collection. Some of the songs named on the playlist are «Electric Head Part 1» by White Zombie, «Shooter» by Rednex and «Sleep Now in the Fire» by Rage Against the Machine. Revy is also shown to be a fan of the band Guitar Wolf.

В бою использует парные пистолеты Colt 1911, или Beretta, модель 76 или модель 89. О его высоких способностях говорит то, что он смог выжить в дуэли с Балалайкой в 1993 году, успешно отбиться от нападения Гензеля и Гретель, в котором погибла вся его охрана, и играючи разоружил Фабиолу Иглесиас.

Персонаж Мистера Чана базируется на героях Чоу Юньфата в фильмах Джона Ву.

As of October 2007, the manga series has sold over 3 million copies in Japan. About.com’s Deb Aoki listed Viz Media’s English release of Black Lagoon as the best new seinen manga of 2008, along with Gantz. The anime series has received internationally positive reviews. With Chris Beveridge of Anime on DVD going so far as to say:
“To my surprise, knowing practically nothing about the show beyond a two minute clip at a convention, Black Lagoon manages to kick all kinds of ass. In English no less. The draw of a full bitrate 5.1 mix got me to watch it in English only to find that with most of the characters being western and in settings outside of Japan it works very well.”

Production[]

In an interview with Otaku USA, Rei Hiroe stated that Black Lagoon was inspired by James Ellroy, John Woo, Quentin Tarantino and Stephen King, as well as hearing about actual piracy cases in the East China Sea]] in the 1990s.

Black Lagoon includes a considerable amount of graphic violence, often involving violent gun fights and spectacular physical feats in battle. Many of the characters who are most skilled with weapons (mainly guns) are women, thereby bearing a similarity with «girls-with-guns» genre with the six strongest women in the series adhering to some type of stereotype (dragon lady, referring to Revy, maids, referring to Roberta and Fabiola, nuns, referring to Eda, etc.). Some of the scenes and dialogue are within the realm of dark comedy, as humorous moments occur or are mentioned during and after many violent battles.

The character concept, gritty atmosphere and violence blending with black comedy depicted in Black Lagoon pays a homage to the films by Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers. The Yellow Flag bar and Mexican standoff scenes in the series pays a tribute to spaghetti westerns; Tarantino is known for making references to spaghetti westerns in his films. It also make references to Tarantino’s favorite films, such as The Wild Bunch poster (titled The Wild Punch) seen in Revy’s bedroom in episode 11 of the anime and Revy mentioning My Bloody Valentine in episode 24.

The «Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise» arc showed that most of the characters throughout the series actually speak English, with the Japanese simply being done for the audience. While the English voice acting in the anime is heavy in Japanese pronunciation, nearly all occurrences of English lines in the manga are accurate. However, the instances of Cyrillic script tend to be less so.

Information[]

The twins were born in Romania and grew up in a state-run orphanage in Romania. After the death of Nicolae Ceaușescu and the downfall of his communist regime, a large number of orphans, including the twins, fell into the hands of the Romanian mob.

Under the control of mob groups that used them as sex slaves, «Hänsel» and «Gretel» are forced to participate in pedophiliac snuff films, in which they are either to murder other children or be raped. Such horrific incidents and witnessing continual beatings of other children turned them into sadistic, fierce, cunning, and deranged killers. They have a firm belief that their life spans are extended by killing others. This belief probably derives from the fact that they had to kill other children to avoid beatings in their orphanage years.

Unknown to most people, «Hänsel» and «Gretel» are actually two personalities alternately adopted by the two children, both of whom suffer from ‘dissociative identity disorder’, meaning they swap their identities as «Hänsel» and «Gretel» with each other from time to time (these were their stage names in the films as confirmed by Balalaika). This appears to be indicated through the swapping of clothes and a wig. There are slight implications that they are incestuous, possibly due to the abuse they suffered. The twins have a tendency to express this most intensely during charged situations such as murders or narrow escapes. Among other things, they have been shown kissing, reciting romantic quotes, and stripping together. The twins consist of one being male and the other being female as seen in the omake of Lagoon.

In combat, «Hänsel» wields a sharp, wicked-looking battle ax while «Gretel» uses a M-1918 Browning Automatic Rifle that appears to be taller than ‘she’ is. Both also carry additional sidearms. While they were mentally deranged, Hänsel and Gretel were also cunning, having used one of the local orphans as a decoy to distract the bounty hunters and using money to distract Eda. They were also not above using their innocent appearance to deceive their enemies.

Gretel’s Weapon of Choice.

As revenge for killing Balalaika’s men, Balalaika used herself to lure Hänsel into one of Roanapur’s parks, where he is shot from a distance by one of her snipers in the leg and the arm. Unsatisfied, Balalaika decides to not torture him but to watch him bleed to death, and witness him crying in his final moments, much to Boris’ displeasure and the discomfort of several of her other men. Meanwhile, Gretel manages to escape and eventually boards the Black Lagoon of her own volition. On the ship, she and Rock bond, and his kindness prompts her to open up and reveal her and Hansel’s horrific backstory, as well as their twisted belief system and that Gretel is Hansel wearing a wig. Rock, completely distraught by hearing this, desperately hugs Gretel/Hansel, who seems genuinely shocked at experiencing the honest affection of another human being. As Rock hugs her and tries to change her view of the world, Gretel momentarily looks affected by his earnestness, and becomes saddened that she upset him. Attempting to cheer him up, she shows him her genitals. Now completely horrified, Rock leaves the cabin, and Revy, thinking the girl was simply messing with Rock, punches her in the face. This infuriates Gretel and brings her fierce and sadistic front back up, and she taunts Revy about how they are the same. However, she remains affected by Rock’s kindness and takes a genuine liking to him. The two arrange to meet up and have a picnic at some point in the future.

However, just as Gretel disembarks she is gunned down by Elroy, the get away man Dutch contacted, who was bribed by Hotel Moscow. While Rock is initially horrified at her death, he expresses relief that Gretel and her brother are now at peace. After she had died Dutch suggested that they bring something to cover her up however, Rock quickly refused, saying that it would be better if she had died looking up at the sky.

Балалайка (バラライカ Bararaika), настоящее имя . Русская, возраст — 30-35 лет. Бывший капитан ВДВ. Её отец совершил какое-то преступление, возможно бежал на Запад. Владилену воспитывал дед — генерал-майор Советской Армии. Владилена вступила в воздушно-десантные войска, прошла Афганскую войну, дослужившись до капитана. Была разжалована и уволена из армии. В 1992 году собрала выживших членов своего отряда и сформировала банду. Была направлена для установки власти русской мафии в Юго-Восточной Азии, в чем преуспела. Одна из самых влиятельных людей Роанапура. Находится в международном розыске по линии Интерпола.

Жестокий и безжалостный профессионал, не чурающийся никаких методов для достижения цели. Заботится о благополучии своих людей и участвует в повседневной жизни своей группировки, как если бы это была армия. Не терпит потерь среди своих ветеранов, поэтому в качестве пушечного мяса, как правило использует наемников или своих союзников. Мстительна.

Прекрасный стрелок и снайпер. Мечтала принять участие в Олимпийских играх, в составе сборной по стрельбе. Хороший командир, талантливый стратег и тактик. Десантники, служившие под её началом абсолютно преданы ей.
В основном использует автоматический пистолет Стечкина.
Прозвище Балалайка вероятно получено во время Афганской Войны, так на солдатском жаргоне именуется снайперская винтовка Драгунова. Другое прозвище Паленая (Fry-face), получено из-за ожогов лица, которые она получила в одном из боев Афганской войны. Первое прозвище все используют, вместо её настоящего имени, вторым Балалайку называют только враги.

Борис (ボリス Borisu). Бывший старший сержант ВДВ. Заместитель Балалайки в «Отеле Москва». Служил во взводе Балалайки в Афганистане. Вероятно был её взводным сержантом. Умен, смел и полностью предан своему командиру.

Борис — высокий мужчина, спортивного телосложения. Лицо пересекает шрам, предположительно от удара ножом. В омаке 7 тома манги, показан Борис в возрасте 15 лет — худощавый мальчик, с девчачим лицом и фигурой. По его словам он вступил в армию, чтобы стать сильным.

Appearance[]

Rock’s design

Rock is a fair-skinned Japanese salaryman. His black hair has fringe on the right side and brown eyes. Eda, who is always teasing Rock, defines him as «handsome» and «cute», but little is known about how others perceive his physical appearance.

Despite being a pirate, Rock is able to retain his business persona by continuing to wear a teal neck tie, short-sleeved dress shirt, slacks, and dress shoes. From the outside, Rock appears as a normal person, which ironically makes him stand out from the rest of Roanapur’s residents. On the other hand, Revy preferred Rock to wear the Hawaiian shirt that she bought for him when he first joined the company. But being who he is, Rock prefers his usual wear even when he’s at Yellowflag or on a job. Ultimately, Rock not abandoning his Japanese Business Man looks represents his lingering attachment to his old way of life.

Relationships[]

Revy

From the beginning, Revy had a explosive and rough attitude towards Rock. It grows to a respectful but still rough relationship near the middle of the series. At times, he criticized some of her usual habits and job related actions to be extreme, infantile and sickening in ways. He has also recognized her actions are not just out of toughness or sheer recklessness but also mental illness and disorders that have made her become who she is. To anyone else, Revy would retaliate to this attitude but took his words into account. Especially in their emotional standoff at a diner in Calm Down, Two Men. Rock left a lasting impact on her life after the confrontation. Rock is probably unaware of Revy’s romantic feelings towards him even though she has become attentive and protective of him and displays jealousy, always ready to lash out at anyone who plans to hurt, kill, or hit on him. Even so, she hides the fact by lashing out against him for his stupidity, morals, moments of embarrassment and chastises him about «trying to get himself killed». She also complains about his habit of being captured/kidnapped, though she does have a point to her claim. Rock is also unaware of moments when Revy could be seen visibly empathetic when he is hurt, or in a state of depression under grim circumstances like his feelings of alienation from Roanapur. His personality grew darker in Roberta’s Blood Trail, in response Revy was very disturbed and at some point kicked him across the deck of the boat.

Revy seems to unconsciously feed off of Rock’s more soft, kind, and justice-driven personality. She becomes very protective of what she probably sees as the only beacon of light in Roanapur, even going as far as to encourage Rock’s reckless side during the Wired Red Wild Card arc in the manga.

Likewise, Rock seems to unconsciously feed off of Revy’s more dark, sadistic nature. Slowly becoming more and more comfortable with corruption, he realizes he gets a psychological thrill out of making risky gambles with people’s lives and does so on multiple occasions to solve problems.

Dutch

As a direct accomplice to Rocks kidnapping in the past, of course, there was talk ransoming and threatening and of course roughing up. But over time in taking him he took a liking and respect to Rock for his resourcefulness and skills as a former businessman which serve well in the company. Dutch remains unusually calm and mellow than the average person an obvious contradiction to most in the world of Roanapur. In Roberta’s Blood Trail he along with the rest of the group were uneasy and disturbed by Rock’s growing darkness as a result of the twisted wiles of Roanapur.

Benny

For the most part, Benny remains to get along with Rock. Seeming to be on common and friendly ground. Benny seems to be the only kind of normal person to talk to and not get eventually yelled at like Revy. In Roberta’s Blood Trail, like the rest of Lagoon, he was troubled by Rock’s dark transformation. And there were some moments of weirdness between them when Jane begins a relationship with Benny. And sexually disturbing moments upon her return.

Mr. Chang

Mr. Chang is often amused at Rock’s «unique» way of handling things, once commenting that Rock’s actions will determine the fate of not only Garcia and Roberta, but of Roanapur itself.

Реви часто подкалывает Шенхуа по поводу часто употребляемой ею фразой «типа того».

Была тяжело ранена Эдой во время осады офиса «Лагуны», но была спасена Лоттоном. Позже приняла участие в поисках Роберты, которая чуть не убила Шеньхуа, предварительно перекусив её оружие на части.

Сойер Чистильщица

Настоящее имя Фредерика Сойер. Наемный палач, которую обычно нанимают для организации показательной вивисекции. Обычно носит одежду мясника или патологоанатома: халат и передник, очки с маской и повязку. В обычной жизни носит платье напоминающее готическую лолиту. Оружие — цепная пила.

В детстве ей перерезали горло, в результате чего, она пользуется голосообразующим аппаратом. Его потеря привела её в состояние шока, что в итоге спасло Рока и Джейн от расправы. Получила ранения при падении с крыши офиса «Лагуны», но была подобрана Лоттоном и Шенхуа. Позже участвовала в поисках Роберты,которая её обезоружила, сломав цепную пилу, и чуть не убила.
Из оружия использует бензопилу.

Лоттон Волшебник

Лоттон Волшебник (ロットン・“ザ・ウィザード Rotton «Za Wizādo) — наемник, нанятый Расселом для поимки Джейн. Высокий и худощавый блондин. Носит плащ с глухим воротником, под который надевает бронежилет. Был подстрелен Реви, но выжил, благодаря бронежилету. Любитель попозировать, что обычно приводит к печальным для него последствиям. В популярном многосерийном фильме присутствует большое количество различных актёров. Есть и достаточно знаменитые. И те, для кого это был первый опыт съёмок. Но несмотря на ни на что, все актёры сериала «Чёрная лагуна» успешно справились со своими задачами, за что полюбились зрителю. Кто исполнил главные роли в популярном молодежном фильме?

В основной актёрский состав вошли следующие артисты:

Appearance[]

Revy is a Chinese-American, slightly tan-skinned woman of approximately moderate height in her mid to late twenties with burgundy hair (brown hair in the manga) that she typically keeps in low loose ponytail with rather large bangs falling onto her forehead on either side, along with two Shoulder-length sidelocks framing her face, amber-brown eyes, a tribal tattoo that reaches all the way up to her neck on her upper right arm, a medium-sized bust and she keeps up her physique where she sports a slightly muscular build that she doesn’t conceal in the least in spite of her slender build.

Main Outfit

Her wardrobe typically consists of a black tank top that leaves her stomach exposed, very short cut-off jeans (turned into Denim Shorts) that she never bothers buttoning up as she uses a US Army webbing belt to keep them up instead, a pair of US military jungle boots without socks and a pair of black fingerless gloves. Revy also sports a pair of brown leather cross-draw shoulder holsters to store her twin Berettas in whenever she isn’t using them.

Winter Outfit

For colder climates, such as winter in Tokyo, Revy resorts to something a little warmer, including a warm hat, a lined brown coat, full gloves, a horizontally striped miniskirt, black leggings and brown boots.

Roberta’s Blood Trail[]

At the beginning of episode 2 in Roberta’s Blood Trail, he is seen with Rock as they pick up Garcia and Fabiola, so they can go and search for Roberta. After not being able to find the people who could give them clues to the elder maid’s whereabouts, he is seen sitting at a table with Rock, Garcia Lovelace, and Fabiola Iglesias within the food market.

When Garcia and the younger maid agree that one could easily kill with using a gun, Benny speaks up and tells the two that he applauds their beliefs, but it isn’t the right attitude to have for Roanapur. He also tells them that he doesn’t usually give out advice. Upon taking a serious and solemn demeanor, the advice he gives the young ones is that if they ever have to fire a gun, is not to think nor hesitate and be sure to shoot to kill. This surprises Rock and after Benny gets up and walks away from the table and Rock follows him. Rock asks why he would say that and Benny responds that he doesn’t want to see Garcia and Fabiola get killed then says he wouldn’t get anymore involved with the search for Roberta.

He also asks Rock how much can one’s heart take when every death is like a plate of armor wearing you down and if the former businessman could handle that. The advice given and said statement could be a clue to Benny’s past.

Many of the series’ characters compare them to a similar pair of disturbed, sadistic twins from the American film The Shining. In the manga, the song sung by Gretel to Rock on the Black Lagoon is called «Midnight, the Stars, and You», the song used in the ending credits to The Shining. In the anime, she sings «The World of Midnight», made for the anime and sung by Minako Obata.
• In the anime, their specific genders are unclear, and in Omake 4, it makes it seem like nothing changed because the children’s true individual genders are unknown.
